If you want to make detergent, the most important difference is the manner in which soap interacts with water. Soap forms a scum in hard water conditions – which affect most countries. This film of scum, which can turn laundry a shade of grey, is virtually impossible to dissolve and will not rinse away from the surface to which it has adhered. This same grey layer of soap scum is what you will often see in showers – hence the reason bathroom cleaning agents often contain strong agents to dissolve fats.
